Princess Charlotte

Princess Charlotte of Wales died on November 6, 1817, after delivering a stillborn son. Daughter of the Prince Regent (later George IV), she would have followed him on the throne. Her death was the occasion for a great public mourning. This picture shows the Princess Charlotte Memorial by Matthew Wyatt that stands in St. George's Chapel, Windsor. The Memorial shows the Princess rising to Heaven along with angels, the one on the left holding the infant. (Princess Charlotte Memorial)

Among the many public mementoes of the Princess's death was this medal. On the front, the Princess is shown in profile surrounded by the words "H.R.H. THE PRINCESS CHARLOTTE" and on the back, the traditional weeping willow and funerary urn are surrounded by the words "BRITANNIA MOURNS HER PRINCESS DEAD." Below the urn: "DIED NOV. 6, 1817 AGED 21."
